Advantages of Learnerships
Learnerships refers to a learning programme which is done at the place of work and is directly related to one’s occupation, for example electrical engineering. A leanership programme will help a student to get access to practical knowledge in his/her working and learning place to be better equipped for the job market. They are important because they lead to registered qualification, the certification does not only cover the technical areas but also account for life skills such as teamwork and communication
It is based on a binding agreement between the learner, employer and training provider to spell out their duties to ensure quality of the training and protect interests of everyone involved in the programme. Through this program, there is advanced exposure to learning by the student since training involves how to tackle specifically what they will be doing at work when employed later on, while at the same time gaining extra skills through personal experiences. Learnership programmes are important because they help to improve the productivity of students who get practical skills that they can apply at places of work and therefore resources can be utilized fully. Students who have completed the learnership programme are allowed by laws governing education activities of a country to go for a higher education certificate since they have met all requirements in a learning experience.
Another impact of the programme on the student is that they become responsible employees later on and they can work under minimal supervision because the employer is confident in their ability to apply the practical skills they acquired during the programme. This program also ensures that more practical skills are gained by the learner so that he/she is more prepared to get into the outside world and make a difference through the application of the skills in different ways to real situations. Learners get motivated to become better workers when they successfully solve problems in the field and this motivation when carried on to a time when they are employed means that their performance is to the maximum of their ability which is of great influence to the business in a positive way. Due to acquisition of knowledge and skills by the employees and its application in the workplace, the company providing the learnership program will be raising the skills level of employees and at the same time improving work performance. The programme will provide an opportunity for the employer-employee relationship to grow and in the process, the employer can be able to select a number of learners who can be useful in the growth of the company as per their good performance during the programme.
